BIONICS as Leitmotiv

The dynamic recovery of industry in the 1st quarter 2010 is leading to a push in innovation. Together with a unique network of research institutes, machine manufacturers, chemical an auxiliary producers fiber innovations become the main source for new textile products and nonwovens with progress in high-tech applications and environmental protection. In the plenary session the University of Ghent will make a presentation about BIONICS in the development of polymers and fibers. Amongst others in the main sections Fibers Natureworks LLC, Minnetonka/USA will hold a lecture about environmentally beneficial biopolymers for fibers and nonwovens, ITV Denkendorf about the potentials of biomimetic inspired fiber based materials and Mercedes Benz/Sindelfingen/D about biomimetics as an instrument for car styling.

More optimism and interest in innovations is also represented in the 20 % higher registration figures (in comparison to 2009) of early birds.

More than 100 lectures on main topics
Some 32 lectures can be found in the section NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN FIBERS. Out of the total number of highly qualified presentations we should like to mention the Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial/BR with a lecture on the topic of strategies for the man-made fibers industry in Brazil and Oerlikon Neumag/D with a report on polypropyle bi-component fibers. The main topic FIBERS AND TEXTILES IN TRANSPORTATION will start with a lecture of the Institute of angewandte Forschung of the Hochschule Reutlingen on the theme trends in transportation interior – textiles and materials; a further 30 presenations will complete this section. The topic NONWOVENS has found a surprisingly high echo: 10 speakers from Europe, The Americas and Asia will present innovative fields of application for a dynamically growing industry. EU RESEARCH PROJECTS will present in 3 lectures developments in textile architecture, textiles with integrated sensors and temperature regulating fibers. In the section NEW FUNCTIONALITIES THROUGH SPINFINISHES AND MODIFICATIONS internationally renown industrial companies will report in numerous cases about spin-finishes an additives with new functionalities for fibers, yarns and fabrics.

Strong presence of automotive manufacturers
For the first time the car making industry will be represented: Mercedes Benz AG/Sindelfingen will speak about Bionic Car – Biomimetics an instrument for Carstyling, Adam Opel GmbH / Rüsselsheim about application of Automotive Textiles and their quality requirements of global usage, Volkwagen AG/Wolfsburg about soiling and cleaning characteristics of textiles used in automobiles.

Moderated talk:
Green 2.0 – a new era of textile sustainability

Sustainable through innovation and cooperation
In a study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, over 60 % of consumers stated that sustainability issues (climate change, poverty, food and water shortages) were the most important issues facing the world. 80 % are “worried” about climate change. Consumers clearly indicate that they want to buy more sustainable; 58 % buy fewer sustainable products than they would like to. The greatest growth in intent is indicated in non-food categories, such as clothing and homeware.

The era of cheap and easily available raw materials has come to an end – sustainability has become an economic necessity. A moderated talk will take a closer look at aspects of Green 2.0, the new age of textile sustainability. The scope of topics will range from changing consumer lifestyles and occasionally confusing product labeling to possible alternatives to products and production processes. Issues such as networking through innovative models of cooperation and a potential shift in the definition of “growth” towards the qualitative aspect will be addressed.
